Have you thought about starting a blog but are unsure of how to make money blogging with a new blog? I’m sure you’ve wondered, “how do you make money online with a blog?” If you just started a blog and have very little traffic, this post will show you how you can start making money with your new blog in 2020.
Blogging has become very popular, but let me start by saying that it’s not a get rich quick scheme.
If anyone tells you that you can make a full-time income from blogging within 3 months when you’ve never had any experience with blogging, WordPress or promoting on social media – they are lying to you and are not to be trusted.
Blogging is a lot hard work in the beginning but if you stick with it, you can make a lot of money blogging and eventually, it can become a source of completely passive income.
There are many people making millions of dollars from their blog, so why can’t you?
“I don’t know how to start a blog or how to start making money blogging!”
Oh.. that’s why.
Well, luckily I’ve put together this easy to understand, no fluff, no BS, real AF post about how to make money online with a new blog.
Pin for later!
I never believed that you could actually make money blogging until I started reading income reports from different bloggers. The more you get into blogging, the more you’ll see bloggers sharing income reports to gain credibility and inspire you to start a blog (while using their affiliate links).
Ruth Sukoup from Livewellspendless.com is a legend. She started out as a mom blogger and has now become a multimillionaire, owning her own media group, employing hundreds of people and making millions of dollars each year.
Making money as a blogger is amazing for so many reasons – but the main one is that once you start your blog and self-host it then you own it.
As you grow and monetize your blog, it can become your business – just as it did for myself, Ruth and countless other bloggers making money online.
The reason I’m so passionate about helping you start a blog is that it’s one of the best ways to start making a lot of money online for a really, really low start-up cost.
In the beginning, when you start your new blog, the only thing you actually have to pay for is your web hosting. I use and recommend using Bluehost because it’s the cheapest for beginners and they have great service!
As your blog grows, there will be more costs, but in the beginning, hosting is the only thing you need to pay for.

How to make money with a new blog
There are 4 main ways to make money blogging online:
- Affiliate Marketing
- Sponsored Posts
- Selling your own products
If you’re lost, don’t worry. I’m going to explain in plain English what each of these means.

how to Make Money on Blogging with Affiliate MArketing
If you’ve never heard of or don’t quite understand what affiliate marketing means, I have a surprise for you – you’ve most likely already done it many times in your life you just haven’t been paid for it.
Let me explain.
Have you ever had a great experience at a restaurant and then recommended it to one of your friends? Did your friend then go to that restaurant based on your recommendation? Well, my friend, that was affiliate marketing.
If you were an affiliate partner for that restaurant, you would have got a small commission for referring your friend.
Instead, you did it for free and the restaurant made money from your recommendation.
That’s essentially what affiliate marketing is.
When you participate in affiliate marketing online, you use links on your blog to recommend great products or services that will help your audience and then you make a commission if they purchase anything from clicking your link.
How to effectively make money with affiliate marketing on your blog:
- You sign up to be an affiliate for a product or service.
- The company approves you based on whether or not your blog fits their brand and how you can promote them
- Once approved, you’ll get your own personalized link that is tracked
- Then you create content on your blog and recommend the affiliate products/service by inserting your affiliate link seamlessly (and naturally) in the content
- Every purchase made using your specific link gives you a commission
- As your traffic grows and more people purchase using your affiliate link, the more money you’ll make.
Here’s a snapshot of affiliate links in my post:
The “clickable” links (highlighted in green) are my affiliate links. So when someone clicks on it and signs up for Swagbucks, I will be paid a small commission.
The best part about affiliate marketing is that you’re helping people solve their problems by recommending things that will actually help them! I absolutely love Swagbucks and everything I recommend in this post that helps people make money online for free!
This is actually the most important thing to know in order to successfully start making money on your blog with affiliate marketing.
Your affiliate links should help people solve their problems or make their lives easier. No one is going to click your link for something they have no use for, so don’t waste your time.
Only recommend products that you believe in – never just to make a dollar. Once you recommend something that sucks or if your readers start to think you’re just recommending things for the money, you’ll lose their trust and your credibility.
How to get your affiliate links:
There are 2 ways to get an affilaite link to start getting paid to promote products/services online.
- Apply to become an affiliate directly on the company’s website. You can check if they have an affiliate program by going to their website and scrolling to the bottom to see if they have a link to become an affiliate. If they do, then apply to become an affiliate directly through their site!
- Apply through an affiliate network. Don’t know what this is? Read on to find out!
What is an Affiliate Network?
An affiliate network is a middle man between the publishers (affiliates) and merchant affiliate programs (companies).
It’s an easy way to find different companies to promote and become an affiliate.
Once you’re approved to be an affiliate for the company in an affiliate network, you’ll get your affiliate link – but all link tracking, reports, and payments will be done through the affiliate network.
For example, Survey Junkie is a merchant affiliate program through Max Bounty (the Affiliate network aka middle man). So in order to promote Survey Junkie through an affiliate link on my blog and start making money with my blog, I first had to join Max Bounty as an affiliate partner and then on my Max Bounty account, I applied to be an affiliate of Survey Junkie.
Once I was approved through Max Bounty, I got my affiliate link and started to insert it into my blog posts where it was applicable like in this post for apps to make extra money online.
When someone clicks on that link and signs up with Survey Junkie, I will get a commission for it.
And that is how you make money blogging with affiliate links. The higher the affiliate commission for each sale is, the more money you make! Also, as your blog traffic grows you can start making a lot more money blogging with affiliate links too!
Affiliate networks new bloggers should join:
You can make a lot of money with a new blog by signing up for these affiliate networks. The more content you have promoting products and services, the higher the chances of your affiliate links being used.
You can make a lot of money faster when the affiliate link has a high commission. There are affiliate links that pay $1 per conversion (a conversion is when someone buys from your link) and there are affiliate links that pay thousands per conversion.
This is one of the best ways to start making a lot of money with affiliate marketing even with a new blog and very little traffic.
You don’t need a lot of traffic to make money with your blog, you just need to serve the right audience and provide the resources through paid affiliate links!
This is how I started making money with my new blog even though my traffic was very low, less than 2000 visitors per month!
So as a new blogger, focus on creating content that solves your reader’s problems and inserting relevant and helpful affiliate links into those posts.
For example, if you have a mom blog, you can write content that describes the must-have items for your first baby and each item could be an affiliate link (usually through amazon).
If your reader makes a purchase from your link, you’ve made your first (of hopefully many) affiliate sales!
I hope this made sense! If you’re unclear about anything comment below and I’ll answer all your questions.
If you want to start off doing affiliate marketing right, then I highly recommend this course:
The course creator, Michelle, is making millions from her blog through affiliate marketing. She is an expert and offers some really solid advice and strategies for succeeding in affiliate marketing.
Ultimate Bundles is one of the best affiliate programs to be a part of. This product honestly sells itself. I’ve bought several products because they offer so much value, it’s a really easy sell.
how to Make money blogging with Advertisements!
Advertising is one of the best ways to make passive income on your blog.
Even with little to no readers each month (which may be the case at the very beginning), you can still start earning money through ads with your new blog.
how to Make Money with a new blog from day 1: Google Adsense
There are no minimum pageviews/visitors required to join Google Adsense unlike some of the other ad networks available.
This means that you can monetize your blog from day 1 through Google Adsense and start making money immediately with your new blog. I will be honest, Google Adsense doesn’t pay very much – but it’s better than nothing right?
Ezoic and Monumetric (10K page Views)
Once you’ve grown your blog a bit more, and reach 10,000 pageviews you can join Ezoic or Monumetric.
They are both ad networks, but the biggest difference between them is that Ezoic is free to join and Monumetric charges you $100 to join.
I don’t know about you, but in the beginning, when your blog isn’t making any money, the thought of spending money to join something that is being offered for FREE elsewhere doesn’t appeal to me.
So of course, I joined Ezoic and highly recommend joining Ezoic once you’ve hit 10K page views (which you can get to pretty fast).
Ezoic is great because it measures by page views and not sessions. Sessions measure each individual person who visits your site and pageviews count just the pageviews in total.
It’s pretty easy to get higher page views even with a low number of visitors by placing helpful links to other related posts in every blog post you share. When people will click to the related post, it counts as one more pageview so just one person can give you 2-3 page views in one session!
This means you’re able to sign up for Ezoic ad network even faster!
Mediavine (25K sessions)
The goal for most bloggers is to get enough traffic to join the Mediavine Ad network. Mediavine pays a lot more for its ad revenue so once you join you can sometimes double your ad revenue.
The big difference is that Mediavine measures sessions and you must have a minimum of 25,000 sessions to join.
It can take a while to build your blog up to 25k sessions, but once you make it, the money will really start to add up!
Adthrive (100K Sessions)
Once you hit 100k sessions, you can upgrade your ad network and join Adthrive. As you can tell, the more viewers you have, the more money you’ll make with ads on your site.
If you keep going and building your blog, working on increasing your traffic and creating valuable content, you’ll start making passive income with your blog through ads.
My goal right now is to build my traffic enough to get on to Mediavine! Ahhh I can’t wait! I started with Google Adsense and I’m now using Ezoic. It was really easy to join and I even had someone help me get approved and signed up really quickly.
In one month with Ezoic, I made more than I made in several months while using Google AdSense. But still, if you have a new blog with very little traffic, something is better than nothing – so I do recommend joining Google Adsense to make money with a brand new blog!
how to Make money blogging with Sponsored Posts
Once your blog starts to build up an audience, you’ll find that various companies may email you to promote their products.
Some companies will send you free merchandise and expect you to post about it for free but I don’t recommend accepting this as free doesn’t pay the bills.
I always recommend doing paid sponsored posts, but only when they fit your niche and will serve your audience. There’s nothing worse than seeing someone promote something that you have no interest in and can clearly tell they’re just doing it to get paid.
No one wants to support someone with no integrity, so always put serving your readers before making a buck and you’ll be fine.
When you’ve built your blog and audience, you can get more sponsored posts by sending proposals or “pitching” to different brands that suit your niche/audience.
You’ll have to put together a media package and proposal to show the brand how working with you will make them money. You’ll explain that your blog readers are their target audience, show them how their product or service will make money if they sponsor you and how their brand matches your brand.
How to make money with a blog: Create your own products
Last, but not least, you can make the most money from your blog once you start to create and sell your own products.
You can create a course, sell a physical product, sell electronic products the list is endless.
You just have to create something of value that will help your audience solve their problems.
Selling your own products is the most lucrative of all the ways to monetize your blog because you get to keep 100% of the sales.
Usually, commissions on an affiliate product are a maximum of 50% and that is RARE.
By selling your own products you can make a lot of money blogging because you get to keep 100% of the profits!
Of course, there are expenses and taxes to account for but the potential for making money is huge! Creating and selling your own products is how many bloggers earn more than $10K per month.
There are many ways that you can make money blogging, but these are the main 4 ways.
Even if you don’t make blogging your main job, there are so many ways to take the skills you gain from blogging and apply them in other jobs that are available in this internet age.
