Ahhhh…Valentine’s day. The time of year when single ladies get together and celebrate their singleness reclaiming the day as “Galentine’s”, the time when new couples in the honeymoon stage have outrageous celebrations and the time when long-time married couples roll their eyes and think “what should I do this time?” if they remember it at all lol.
I’ve been married for 6 years and I almost completely forgot about Valentine’s day lol. I don’t really think that it’s a big deal, BUT I do believe that it’s a nice reminder to do something special for your partner. You don’t have to spend a lot on valentine’s day, despite what the marketing campaigns say – there are lots of free things to do for valentine’s day.
Most relationships don’t last because we stop dating, we stop trying to keep it sexy and we start taking our partners for granted. Let’s make an effort to make our partners feel amazing this Vday.
To help, I’ve crafted this list:
25 ways to celebrate Valentine’s day for free
Pin it for later!
1. Get up early and make them their favorite breakfast
Serve it to them in bed, or in the kitchen lol. I personally don’t like eating in my bed and while the thought of it sounds great, how many of us actually have one of those tray things you see in the movies? Like 0.01%. Let’s eat at the table, together, with some mimosa’s – or just be fancy with OJ in champagne flutes to keep it in the budget.
2. Write 10 things you love about them
Take some time and really think about some unique and special things you love about your partner then post them all over your room or all over the house for them to find. This is a really special thing you can do for valentine’s day for free which will leave a lasting impression.
3. Make a romantic treasure hunt.
Write clues with love notes, or make it sexy. The clues should lead your partner to you waiting somewhere special. For some this is the bedroom, for others it may be the kitchen. #foodislife #foodislove
4. Have a home-made romantic candlelit dinner
Ok this is a cheap valentine’s idea which has been done many times, but that’s because you have the power to make it extremely romantic and special. Make it fancy with a nice table cloth, candles, place settings and go the extra mile. Just because you’re dining at home, doesn’t mean it can’t be special!
5. Make a Sexy Note Jar
This is a really great frugal valentine’s day gift. Write one thing you could do to each other on ten small pieces of paper. Then fold the papers and put them in a jar. Have a date night where you each take turns picking from the jar. Each person has to do the thing that’s written on the paper they choose.
6. Have a movie night
But with all of their favorite movies – especially the ones they love and you hate. This is for them and it will really show you care. If you’re trying to spend less money on valentine’s day, this is the perfect way to show them you can on valentine’s day for free!
7. Make a photo collage
Take some time to choose some of your best photos with all the special occasions you’ve shared and write a note about the day to show how much you love and appreciate them for always being there and sharing life with you. This frugal valentine’s day gift is very inexpensive, but will take some time to find the best photos!
8. Make a coupon book
Coupon books are a classic way to celebrate valentine’s day for free! You can make a coupon book and include coupons for different things like “One free massage” “One free dinner” “Get out of the dishes” etc. Be creative, and try to offer them something you know they would LOVE.
9. Build a snowman
I know this sounds childish, but it’ll be a fun experience to do together. You may even get in a snowball fight! Have fun with it and let your inner child come out and play!
If you want to keep things competitive – have a snowman or snow castle building competition! Winner gets a prize of anything you want (in the bedroom!) I always go for massages since he hates giving them and I love getting them lol.
If you’re in a warm place for Vday, then have a romantic picnic in a park. Lay down, find the cloud animals, take photos and enjoy.
10. Play Valentines Day Strip Poker

13. Cook a new recipe together
If they really don’t like to cook then fix them their favorite drink and cook while they relax. Cooking together is a great way to spend time together and celebrate valentine’s day on a budget. You can make a whole day of it from getting the groceries, prepping the food and then finally cooking it together.
14. Get outdoors
Go on a hike somewhere you’ve never been before.
15. Go Stargazing
Drive out somewhere far away, where there’s no light pollution and stargaze. Bring a bottle of wine, snacks and a blanket.
